2009 Voting Results

There were several surprises involving the 2009 Michigan Rock and Roll Legends voting this year. With a record number of email votes cast, it was the first year that none of the inductees were named on at least 33% percent of the ballots sent in. In all, 248 Michigan artists received at least one vote.

The six Michigan artists who were voted in include two popular regional bands from the Grand Rapids area; the JuJus and Me & Dem Guys. The other four are nationally-known Michigan artists; Glenn Frey, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Mitch Ryder, and Al Green. In addition, Motown’s founder Berry Gordy Jr. was selected as 2009’s Honorary Non-Performer.

The voting totals for this year’s inductees are as follows: The JuJus - 30.9 %, Me & Dem Guys – 27.9 %, Glenn Frey – 27.4 %, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen – 26.7 %, Mitch Ryder – 25.6 %, and Al Green – 25 %.

Finishing short of induction were: The Romantics – 23.8 %, Diana Ross – 19.6 %, The Rationals – 19.6 %, the Kingtones – 19.6 %, The Spinners – 19.6 %, Iggy Pop – 19 %, Della Reese – 18.5 %, Sonny Bono – 17.9 %, Frijid Pink – 17.3 %, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters – 16.7 %, Edwin Starr – 16.7 % The Funk Brothers – 14.8 %, The Aardvarks – 14.4 %, SRC – 14.2 %, The Bossmen – 13.7 %, The Soulbenders – 13.1 % and Suzi Quatro – 13.1 %. The U.P band with the highest vote total was the Riot Squad with 7. 1%

Fifteen songs were selected in the 2009 voting bringing the total number of Legendary Michigan Songs to forty. 213 different songs received at least one vote. The fifteen top vote-getters were: “Closer To Home/I’m Your Captain” – Grand Funk Railroad, “Shake, Rattle And Roll” – Bill Haley And His Comets, “Smokin’ In The Boy’s Room” – Brownsville Station, “My Guy” – Mary Wells, “School’s Out” – Alice Cooper, “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” – Bob Seger System, “Let’s Stay Together” – Al Green, “Hats Off To Larry” – Del Shannon, “House Of The Rising Sun” – Frijid Pink, “What I Like About You” – The Romantics, “Old Time Rock & Roll” – Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, “War” – Edwin Starr, “Some Kind Of Wonderful” – Grand Funk, “Baby I Need Your Loving” – The Four Tops, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Diana Ross.
