The online voting for the 2016 MRRL Hall of Fame and Legendary Michigan Songs concluded at midnight on June 1st. The Blue Echoes, a Rockabilly band formed in 1957 in Lansing, Michigan, finished first in the voting. They were followed by Cub Koda from tiny Manchester, Michigan, who was honored for his post-Brownsville Station career. The Woolies, also from Lansing, came in third in the voting. The band’s biggest hit. “Who Do You Love”, was voted a Legendary Michigan Song back in 2008.
The MRRL Class of 2016 also included three Historical Inductees that were announced earlier in the year. Barbara Lewis from South Lyon, Michigan, charted ten songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 during the 1960s. Her recording of “Baby I’m Yours” was voted a Legendary Michigan song in 2013. Little Willie John was one of Detroit’s early R&B stars. His original recording of “Fever” was a # 1 R&B hit in 1956. The Contours were one of Motown’s early singing groups. Their recording of “Do You Love Me” was a # 1 R&B hit in 1962 and a # 3 hit on the Hot 100. “Do You Love Me” was voted one of the first ten Legendary Michigan Songs in 2007. The 2016 inductees bring the total number of artists and individuals in the MRRL Hall of Fame to 91. The ten recordings that were voted Legendary Michigan Songs in 2016 increased the total of those honored to 110. Topping this year’s list is “Boom Boom” by John Lee Hooker. It was followed by “Respect” by The Rationals. “Jenny Take A Ride” became the 3rd recording by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels to be honored. The rest of the inductees include “Black Sheep” by SRC, “Reach Out I’ll Be There” by the Four Tops, “City Slang” by Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, “Roll Me Away” by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (the 12th Seger recording to be honored), “Farmer John” by the Tidal Waves, “Mind Over Matter” by Nolan Strong” and “True Blue” by Madonna.
