"Nowhere To Run" (Holland-Dozier-Holland) - Martha & The Vandellas; Gordy label, # 8 Billboard Hot 100, # 5 Billboard R&B - 1965. Inducted 2023.

“Nowhere To Run” is one of Martha & The Vandellas’ signature songs. It was written and produced by Motown’s main production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, and it depicts the story of a woman trapped in a bad relationship with a man she cannot help but love.

Holland-Dozier-Holland gave the song a large hard-driving instrumentation similar to the sound of Martha & The Vandellas’ previous hit “Dancing In The Street” with snow chains added as percussion along with tambourine and drums.

Included on their third album, “Dance Party.” in 1965, “Nowhere To Run” reached # 8 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and # 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. It also charted in the UK, peaking at # 26.
