Featured Displays

The exhibit features photos of the 129 Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame inductees, the classic poster art of Gary Grimshaw, Dennis Loren, and Carl Lundgren, unpublished photos of Madonna, a mural celebrating the Michigan teen clubs of the 1960s, and a celebration of Creem magazine. In addition, visitors will discover displays devoted to “96 Tears,” (Bay City’s Official Rock & Roll Song), Alice Cooper, a signed guitar collection from some of rock’s biggest names, the photography and album covers of Tom Bert, a rock and roll timeline, and a Twilight Zone tribute titled The Mysterious Death of Del Shannon.

Virtual Drive-In

The Starlite Drive-In mural is located in the main gallery on the second floor and it is where the Motown Time Capsule video is in constant rotation. This wonderful production uses newsreel footage, animation, and performances to look at American life during the years 1960 through 1979 with hit songs by Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Temptations, Edwin Starr and more providing the soundtrack.

The intimate Robert and Anne Hachtel Theater on the museum’s first floor is an important part of the MRRL HOF exhibit. Visitors can view two excellent Madonna-related features: Zach Neumeyer’s award-winning short film, Smelly Little Town, and the museum’s own fundraising documentary, Great Affection. Episodes of Gary and Brennan Johnson’s unique video series, The Birth of Michigan Rock and Roll, are also available for viewing in the theater.
